Preparing to go

Carol, Wednesday 12 January:
Why change the habits of a lifetime! Several folks phoned tonight to wish me a safe trip and said "are you packed yet?" Most of them should have known the answer before asking the question. "Of course not...there is still plenty time before the taxi comes at 7am".

Now 01.30hrs and I think I am now packed and ready...not too many clothes...you do not really need many when the temperature in Ghana will be between 28-32 degrees C. I can't wait for the heat and the sunshine. Ghana is in the same time zone as UK but only4-11degrees north of the Equator.

This is my first visit to West Africa and I am intrigued to find out how it differs from East Africa. When asking one friend what I might not think of packing she replied "moisturiser". At this time of the year a hot wind called the harmattan blows from the Sahara region and plays havoc with your skin so moisturiser duly packed along with the Scottish calendars and other gifts for our hosts. So now to bed...hope I do not sleep in!

Who we are

Iain Cunningham
I am Convener of the Local Development Committee of the World Mission Council of Church of Scotland. I am currently the parish minister at Kirkton Parish Church in Carluke, where I have been serving for the last 23 years. I was ordained into the Ministry in 1979. Kirkton Parish Church has partnership links with a congregation and an orphanage in Kenya as well as with a congregation in South Korea. Over the years, through these links and in other contexts, I have had the privilege of visiting a number of countries and I always find learning about other people's cultures and customs to be an enriching and enjoyable experience. One of my interests is music and I find it interesting to discover both the diffferences and the similarities between styles of music in different parts of the world.

I am Twinning and Local Development Secretary for World Mission Council of Church of Scotland. This means I work with presbyteries and congregations in Scotland to resource them in relation to world church and world church issues. In my past life I was a nurse teacher and as well as working in Scotland, I have worked in Pakistan, India and Malawi. I worship at Carrick Knowe Church in Edinburgh where I am an elder, although I was ordained an elder of Malawi’s Church of Central Africa, Synod of Livingstonia Ekwendeni Congregation. They say I am on loan only! I love an adventure so enjoy travelling, meeting new people in their home environment and hearing their story.
